What You Will Learn

NYS Standards: Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables and sounds (phonemes). Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. Demonstrate one-to-one letter-sound correspondence by producing the primary sound. Determine the meaning of words, phrases, figurative language, and academic and content-specific words. Decode multisyllabic words. In literary texts, identify parts of stories, dramas, and poems using terms such as scene, and stanza. Explain how specific illustrations or text features contribute to what is conveyed by the words in the text. Use inquiry and discussion to analyze story elements.

Syllabus

How does that sound?

Early and emerging readers need to hear and to discern different letter sounds. Learners play word games, and rhyming games to sound out vowels, consonants and blends.

The word and the rhyme

Learners play word games and use poetry and rhymes to learn and to repeat familiar words. Introduction to sounding out syllables.
